Norwegian meatballs with brown sauce


  • For the "Meat" cakes:
  • 1 tablespoon of oil
  • 1 Lb vegan "meat"
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable bouillon
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/3 teaspoon black pepper
  • salt to taste - if needed
  • a pinch of oregano
  • pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (optional)
  • 1/4 cup of water - if needed
  • Lingonberry sauce

  • Brown Sauce:
  • ¼ cup vegan butter
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder OR a small, raw onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups of water
  • 4 teaspoons of vegetable Bouillon (or 2 bouillon cubes)
  • ¼ cup vegan cream


  1. Add all the ingredients for the "meat" cakes to a bowl, mix well until incorporated
  2. Form small or medium-sized cakes, add them to a skillet with oil, fry them for about 5 to six minutes on each side on medium heat, remove from the skillet, reserve.
  3. Brown sauce:
  4. Add the butter to a saucepan on medium heat, wait until dissolved, add the flour, stir for about 6 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. Add the garlic powder, the Boullion, the nutmeg, and black pepper, stir and add the water little by little and stir until all is smooth and lump-free, then add the vegan cream.
  6. Serve the kjøttkaker with boiled potatoes, Brussel sprouts or cabbage, lingonberry sauce, and the brown sauce.
